Gas-led Covid recovery irresponsible, should be put to bed

The resignation of Labor party frontbencher and Hunter MP Joel Fitzgibbon signals a time for the Australian Labor Party to get serious about climate change, and creating safe, secure and well paid jobs.

The AMWU believe climate action and the creation of manufacturing jobs can go hand-in-hand. For too long Australians have been told to choose between good jobs and action on climate change – it’s time to reject that myth.

Unions are leading the way to show that this is achievable. The AMWU is one of eight unions partnered with five environmental groups to form the Hunter Jobs Alliance to support climate change policy alongside a just transition for workers.

Quotes attributable to AMWU National Secretary Steve Murphy:

“As Joel Fitzgibbon transitions to the backbench, my mind is with the thousands of workers who have been damaged by his lack of ambition and honesty. Our economy and energy needs are changing fast. We need to face these challenges with workers front and centre.”

“It’s time to get real on climate action. A gas led recovery won’t fix the unemployment crisis, it won’t bring down electricity costs and it won’t deliver climate action and it definitely won’t win an election.”

“Australia needs a plan for future jobs and climate action that is worker led. A gas led recovery does not boost the manufacturing sector and it won’t deliver the jobs that Australian workers deserve.”
